(y/n) sighs heavily and lays his head on the cafe’s table, looking up at his brother with large, pleading, (e/c) eyes. “You’re going to ditch me again?” he whines softly. “That’ll be the fourth time while we’ve been here--and we’ve only been here for a week.” His (h/c) monkey tail twitches in annoyance as he glares softly at his older brother. His brother isn’t even a year older than (y/n) is, but he treats (y/n) like he’s five. “Ever since we got here you’ve treated me like dirt.”

“That’s not true,” Sun replies, leaning back in his chair and using his own blonde tail excessively (like always) to take a sip of his fancy chai latte. “Name one time I’ve treated you like dirt.”

(y/n) adjusts his (f/c) hoddie and sits up straight. “When the ship first docked, you gave us both away as stowaways but ditched me, leaving me to deal with all those angry sailors who were intentionally searching for more stowaways.”

“It’s not like you got caught.”

“That’s just because I’m used to you leaving me to fend for myself,” (y/n) grumbles under his breath. “What’s the name of the girl you’re ditching me for again?”

“Th-there’s no girl…” Sun stutters after choking on his chai. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Yeah I do...that goth chick with the black bow that covers her cat ears? You were following her around last weekend. Guess what. It’s Friday again. She’ll be free to come to Vale from whatever fancy school you said she goes to. You’re going to ditch me once again so that you might have a better chance of getting laid. It’s what you do every time…”

“Hey, (y/n), before you go,” Sun suddenly says before (y/n) can leave and explore the city on his own...again. “You know that guy we’ve been staying with?”

“Qrow...yeah?” (y/n) asks nervously. “He’s not gonna kick us out already, is he?” Sun and (y/n) have been bouncing from generous household to household for most of their lives. They don’t stay in one place too long--but it’s always been at least two weeks before they move on to the next town.

    “No...he...he offered me a deal.”

“What kind of deal?” (y/n) asks his brother.

“If the two of us can maybe find jobs instead of stealing all our food...he’ll let us stay with him for as long as we want.”

“How are we gonna get jobs? We’re useless, uneducated kids--and we’re Faunus,” (y/n) grumbles. “Maybe you’ll figure something out once you get over your little girlfriend.”

“You’re just jealous because no girl will look at you twice,” Sun replies with a laugh as he messes with his brother’s messy, (h/c) hair. “Go find yourself a job. Last one to get a job takes the winner out for dinner.”

“Don’t tell me what to do,” (y/n) grumbles as he gets up. “And you should be more worried about paying for the fancy drink than which one of us is taking the other out for dinner.”

“Get out of here,” Sun says as he waves (y/n) off.

(y/n) stands up and walks out of the cafe as quietly as he can. People inside the cafe were starting to give him and his brother dirty looks--though it didn’t help that Sun was using his tail instead of his hands like he always does. (y/n) doesn’t hate being a Faunus or anything like that. He just wishes that...humans wouldn’t look at him like he’s some disease-ridden stray. His brother always flaunting his ability to steal without getting caught doesn’t exactly help their  reputation at all. Sun can be an idiot...often…

(y/n) gets lost in his thoughts too easily. He doesn’t notice the group of girls coming his way as he’s leaving the cafe. He bumps into one of them, successfully knocking her over. “Sorry,” he murmurs as he helps the snowy-haired girl back up. “I wasn’t watching where I was going.”

“Obviously not,” the girl snaps back.

“You don’t have to be so rude about it, Weiss,” one of her friends says. (y/n) looks up to meet the amber eyes of a familiar face. It’s the girl his brother has been running off with. Great. And the white bitch must be one of her friends.

“Yeah, he just apologized and everything,” the blonde one says.

“It’s fine,” (y/n) grumbles. “Sun’s waiting for you inside,” he tells Blake before turning to leave. Before he goes, his stubborn (e/c) gaze meets strangely jubilant, silver eyes. They linger for a moment before (y/n) goes begrudgingly along his way.

“How did that boy know Sun was waiting for you, Blake?” Ruby asks as she shrugs off the weird staring contest she just had. “Were you making friends without me again?”

“No...I think that was Sun’s little brother,” Blake says as she heads inside the cafe.

“He has a little brother?” Yang asks as she follows suit.

“I can see it,” Weiss says as she glares after the Faunus. “Same lack of respect as his brother and just as juvenile as Ruby over here.”

“What? Hey...We should invite him to lunch with us, don’t you think? Jean and the other guys are meeting up with us too. Maybe it’ll make Sun more comfortable if his brother is there too!”

“That’s a great idea,” Weiss replies sarcastically. “Why don’t you go chase him down and drag him all the way back here?”

“Ok! I’ll be right back!” Ruby waves to her team before heading off in the direction that (y/n) went. The Faunus should be easy to spot… “Oh!” Ruby can’t help but shout when she finds (y/n) again. “Hey friend!”

(y/n) looks up at her, shocked that some girl would hunt him down. “Can I help you?”

“Hello,” she says, skipping over to him. “You probably don’t know me. My name is Ruby Rose--but you can just call me Ruby. My friend Blake knows your brother, so we were going to have lunch with him.”

“Yeah, I know,” (y/n) replies, messing with his (f/c) hoodie.

“Well...do you want to join us?”

“No thanks. Sun made it clear that he doesn’t want me there. He thinks I’m a downer.”

“Hm...so he’s made himself clear has he?” Ruby mumbles to herself. “Well! We’re just going to have to find somewhere else to have lunch now won’t we!”

“W-what do you mean?” (y/n) asks her nervously.

“The two of us can have lunch together.”

“I don’t have the money to pay for lunch,” he admits quietly. “We’re not exactly of wealthy descent.”

“I’ll pay for lunch then,” Ruby tells him with a happy smile.

“You will?” (y/n) asks her quietly.

    “Anything for a friend.”

The two do indeed become friends. Ruby grows to like (y/n) more and more every time she sees him. He knows so much about different places all over the world. She still hasn’t managed to make him smile, but she’s been close several times. So far she’s learned that he hates being dependent on anyone--which sucks because he won’t accept her help when it comes to anything--especially money. But that didn’t stop Ruby from visiting him whenever she didn’t have to be at school--(y/n) even visited her at school during the night two times so far. He would never admit that he enjoyed her bubbly innocence.

“Hey, Ruby?” (y/n) asks as they walk down the street together.

“Yeah, (y/n)?” she replies, watching his (h/c) tail twitch nervously.

    “Uh...nevermind…” he mumbles.

    "Nope."

"Wait. What?" (y/n) asks as confusion riddles his face.

"You can't just bring something up and then not say what's on your mind."

"I don't have anything on my mind," (y/n) grumbles in reply.

"Nope," Ruby repeats with a gentle smile on her face.

    "Stop that."

"I can tell when you have something on your mind, (y/n)." Ruby grabs his hand gently and makes him look at her. "What did you want to say?"

"I uh...I wanted to tell you that a got a job this week while you were at Beacon. I was just thinking that...maybe I could take you out for lunch...like a...a...date?" (y/n) asks her, nervously rubbing the back of his neck.

"A date?" Ruby repeats to herself. "You want to go on a date with me?"

"Is that surprising?" (y/n) replies with a small smile.

"I don't know...most people think of me like some weird little kid...no one's asked me out on a date before."

"Well...let me be the first," (y/n) tells her, his (e/c) eyes brightening a bit.

"Ok! I know the perfect place we can have lunch!"

    "Ok?"

"You really want to have a picnic here?" (y/n) asks as he follows Ruby through the crimson forest. "I can smell Grim everywhere."

"They shouldn't bother us," Ruby replies as she continues to lead them deeper and deeper into Forever Fall. "Besides, if they attack us, I can always defend us using this baby." Ruby playfully pats her weapon.

"You're a lot stronger than you look," (y/n) acknowledges softly.

"Thanks!" Ruby cheers as she lays a blanket down by a river. "Come sit, friend!"

(y/n) chuckles as he sits next to Ruby, placing the picnic basket in front of them. "Ok...you are rather childish. But I like that about you..."

    "You do?"

"Is it really that surprising that I like you?" (y/n) asks her. "I'm more surprised that you've been hanging out with me."

"Why is that?" she asks him softly. "Is it because you're a Faunus?"

    "I guess..."

    "I don't think that matters."

"I figured you wouldn't," (y/n) replies with a slight smile.

Ruby suddenly reaches out and pinches (y/n)'s cheek, making him smile more than he ever would. "You need to smile more," she tells him as her whole face scrunched up in delight. "You're so cute when you smile!"

"I'm not cute," (y/n) replies quietly. "Let my face go..."

He and Ruby spend the next few minutes goofing off and eating their lunch. But all that soon comes to an end when (y/n) suddenly hears something off in the distance. "Sh..." he whispers softly. "Something's out there."

"No one should be out here," Ruby replies as she readies her scythe. "It can only be a Creature of Grim."

"You know...that's just my luck..." (y/n) grumbles. "I get a date with a pretty girl and--" Suddenly, a large black bear-like creature lets out a heavy roar and marches towards the two by the river. "A fricken Ursa has to come along and ruin it..."

"It's ok, (y/n)," Ruby says as she proudly stands before the monster. "I'll protect us both!"

"I don't exactly need your protection," (y/n) mutters under his breath. He silently pulls out his own weapon and watches Ruby battle the Ursa as if she were merely sparring with a teammate. "You're gonna get hurt if you don't take things like this seriously," he calls out to her.

Ruby looks back at him with annoyance written plainly on her face. "I am taking this seriously!" she calls back to him.

She's proven quite wrong when her Crescent Rose is swiped out of her hands by the Ursa. (y/n) sighs and watches as the weapon skids across the crimson forest floor. "I gotcha," he call as he races towards Ruby. He extends his staff and uses it to launch himself towards the high branches of a tree, grabbing Ruby and kicking the Ursa in the face along his way. "Lunch is officially over."

"I guess it was kinda dumb to have a date out here in the first place..." Ruby admits. "Think you can distract the Ursa long enough for me to get my Crescent Rose?"

"I can do one better," (y/n) tells her with a smirk. His staff splits in two, quickly forming two guns--a bit like his older brother's weapon. (y/n) swings down, using his (h/c) tail to hold onto the branch Ruby is sitting on. He aims at the Ursa quickly yet carefully and begins to shoot at its underside--the unarmored side. He jumps down from the branch, still shooting at the monster, and begins to run at it. Ruby watches in excitement as (y/n) slides under the Creature of Grim, still relentlessly shooting at it. With one final shot, he manages to shoot the bear's head off just before it can strike his own. (y/n) chuckles to himself softly as he walks over to where Ruby's weapon lies.

He picks the scythe up with his tail and heads back over to Ruby. Just as he's about to jump onto the branch Ruby is waiting for him on, that very branch breaks. The branch as well as Ruby both collapse onto (y/n). He lets out a heavy grunt and catches Ruby in his arms, but not without falling to the ground. “I thought you were supposed to be ahead of your years in combat,” he mumbles in her ear.

“I didn’t know you were so amazing!” she blurts out happily. “Why didn’t you mention anything about that? You were so cool! You were all like pew pew pew!--and I totally thought that Ursa was gonna get you when you slid under it! But no! You just blew its head off! You’re so cool, (y/n)!”

“Uh...thanks…” (y/n) mumbles as a deep blush spreads across his face. Ruby remains on top of him--rather oblivious to the compromising position she has them both in. She doesn’t notice how she’s straddling the rather distraught (y/n). “You...want to get off now?”

“Oh! Sorry!” Ruby blushes a bit before she rolls off of (y/n) and lies down next to him. “You should become a huntsman.”

“I...I don’t think that I’m cut out for that kind of life,” (y/n) replies quietly.

“What!? Did you not see what you just did!?” Ruby exclaims loudly. “You would be amazing at it! You should totally come to Beacon!”

“Ruby…” (y/n) sighs as he stands up. “Let’s get out of here before we run into anything else…” He takes her hand and helps her up before the two begin to make their way out of Forever Fall. (y/n) picks up Ruby’s Crescent Rose with his tail again and places it in her hands. “I guess it was a nice date.”

“Next time we can go to an actual restaurant,” Ruby tells him with a giggle.

“Oh! Are you running off with your little girlfriend again?” Sun asks his little brother as they sit on some rooftop, watching the sunset.

“I don’t think Ruby is my girlfriend,” (y/n) replies, leaning back a bit and looking for the first star of the night. “What about Blake? Are you two together?”

“I guess you could say that. And there’s nothing wrong with it. We’re both Faunus after all~”

“What are you saying?” (y/n) asks, suddenly sitting up at his brother’s crass words. “Ruby doesn’t care that she’s human and I’m Faunus. And I don’t either. Why would you even say that?”

“I’m just saying...most people in the world--let alone Vale--don’t particularly like us Faunus,” Sun replies as he looks over at his brother. “I don’t know how the humans feel about their own even dating our kind.”

“They’ll have to get used to it, won’t they,” (y/n) replies as he gets up. “I’ll see you back at Qrow’s place.”

“Have fun on your date!” Sun calls after him.

(y/n) ignores his brother as he jumps from building to building, making his way to the restaurant he promised to meet Ruby at. He’s pretty sure that he catches the eye of some police, but he didn’t do anything wrong so...he doesn’t really worry about it. He soon lands silently on the sign of the restaurant. He waits for Ruby to walk by before he swings down to meet her, hanging onto the sign with his tail. Ruby giggles quietly when he kisses her on the nose. “Hey,” he says as he jumps down. “This is our last date for the week.”

“I know. It’s hard to think about. You’re so much fun to be around,” Ruby replies as she takes his hand. She leads him inside for their first dinner date.

(y/n) and Ruby have a rather decent dinner. Ruby is as cheerful and talkative as ever. (y/n) doesn’t mind. He liked hanging out with her and he likes dating her. But one thing that he doesn’t like is the stares that he’s getting from other--richer--humans giving him and Ruby harsh glances. “Are you done with your meal?” their waitress suddenly asks him.

“Um...no,” (y/n) replies, holding in his anger.

“Do you intend to actually pay for this meal?” the waitress asks, this time crossing the line.

Ruby watches (y/n) with sad, gray eyes. His (e/c) ones are gradually becoming darker. “Yes, I do.”

“With your own money or money that you’ve stolen?”

“Money that I’ve earned,” (y/n) spits. “Can we get our bill now?”

“I’ll bring it right out,” the waitress says as she scoffs and walks away.

“Huh…” Ruby says quietly. “She kind of reminds me of Weiss--before she realized that Blake was a Faunus and not all Faunus are members of the White Fang.”

“That’s the girl with white hair who can’t accept a decent apology, right?”

“Yeah…she gets better as you get to know her.”

    “I hope so…”

(y/n) takes the bill when the waitress comes back. He wouldn’t have left a tip, but Ruby kind of stared him down until he left three dollars for her; he refused to leave any more.

“Listen, Ruby,” (y/n) says as he begins to walk her to the station that will bring her back to Beacon. “I’m sorry about what happened back at the restaurant.”

“You shouldn’t be,” she tells him almost immediately. Her normally childish and cheery mood has become strangely serious. “Listen, (y/n). I’m impressed by how you handled that. In a perfect world, no one would care that you’re a Faunus or that I’m dating a Faunus. But this isn’t a perfect world. There’s still prejudice against all Faunus. We both knew you were going to be harassed at such a fancy restaurant. But I think you handled it really well. You didn’t even get that angry at that mean waitress. I can’t wait for next weekend to see what happens next.”

“Hopeful we won’t run into any more Ursa,” (y/n) jokes. “I can’t wait either.”

Ruby lets out a giggle and gives (y/n) a hug. He returns the favor, slyly wrapping his tail around her waist as well. He kisses her nose again, but then leans a bit closer, slowly bringing his lips to hers. Ruby is a bit shocked--it’s her first kiss after all. “See?” she mumbles when they break the kiss. “It doesn’t matter if you’re human or Faunus. I think we can make this work.”

“See you next weekend?” (y/n) asks as he sees his brother walk over with Blake.

“Yup. Can’t wait!” Ruby calls back as she heads toward that platform that will take her to Beacon.
She waves to him and he waves back until Sun suddenly slams him in the back. “I knew it would work out. That Ruby Rose girl is somethin’ else. You’re lucky to have found her.”

“Yeah yeah,” (y/n) grumbles as he walks away. “I think I’m mostly lucky now that you’ve stopped snatching food from anyone you can.”

“We don’t need to be thieves anymore. We don’t even need to run away to anywhere else,” Sun tells him as they begin to walk home. “We’ve got pretty ladies and a good home. We don’t need to worry about police brutality. I think living in Vale is going to work out for us.”

“I’m just glad I have Ruby to keep me in line--and you have Blake.”

“I hear you,” Sun tells him. “Haven’t stolen a thing since that weird run-in with the White Fang. I don’t think you’ve stolen anything since we got here.”

“I don’t need to. I have everything I’ve always wanted.” And Ruby is definitely one of them.
This is for :iconbonecrusher56:
I'm not sure if this is exactly what you were looking for or not. I know you never mentioned anything about the reader being Faunus, but I thought Sun was pretty cool and it added a bit of conflict. I hope you like it!
