Literature Text

That night, (y/n) gets to have a bed to herself for the first time in a very long time. Ludwig has enough beds for the four of them to sleep alone--albeit, he has to sleep on the couch. It’s a small sacrifice. The night is cool, but not too cold. It’s much warmer than their previous nights have been. Arthur stays up a little later than the rest, bringing up ancient texts from his storage back at the home he had with Vladimir and (y/n) so long ago. It only takes one simple spell to pull them from the place he knows he’s left them in. Vladimir taught him the trick a while ago. While the others are sleeping, Arthur is trying to find some clues on what creature Lukas may be. If he can figure that out, maybe they won’t have to travel all the way east to remove the charm from him.

“Arthur?” a sweet voice calls out to him. Even though they have their own beds, Arthur and (y/n) are still sharing a room. It’s a little hard to sleep when a bright emerald light is flooding the room. “Arthur...go to sleep.”

“Sorry, love,” he whispers back. “I was just reading.”

“I know what you were doing,” (y/n) moans. “Even if you can figure out what Lukas is, we’ll still need for him to remember what happened to his brothers.”

    “I know that…” Arthur grumbles.

    “Good. Now go to sleep.”

In the morning, soldiers come to Ludwig’s home to retrieve the vampire within. Their loud knocking wakes everyone up within house. “They vant me,” Vladimir says softly as he approaches the door. “I hope they understand that I von’t say anything bad about my little brother.”

“Even at zhe cost of your own life?” Ludwig asks him softly. “Let me cuff you so zhat zhey don’t get zhe wrong idea.”

“And what would that be?” (y/n) asks the soldier softly. “I thought Vlad was free within the Vatican.”

“Vell...for zhe most part, he is. But not everyone vizhin Rome agrees vizh zhat judgment so zhese are more for...his safety zhan anyone else’s.”

“Are you going to protect him?” Lukas asks the soldier. One can almost hear the concern through all his monotony.

“What’s the trial going to be like?” Arthur asks, ignoring the common concern within the room.

“Are you going to let them make Vlad testify against his own brother?” (y/n) nearly screams at the soldier.

“Please, zhis is not up to me,” Ludwig says softly. “I vill do my best to protect your friend, but zhere is not much else zhat I can do.” He places a heavy hand on (y/n)’s (h/c) head. “I von’t let you down, lieben. You’ve opened my eyes...helped me to see zhat some vampires can love just as much as humans can.”

“That’s because we’re all human,” (y/n) tells the soldier softly.

The soldiers outside burst through Ludwig’s door and drag the cooperative vampire away. Ludwig follows quickly behind, just to make sure that Vladimir will be treated justly. He tells the other three to remain put until someone comes to bring them to the Pope. He hadn’t mentioned it earlier, but the child wanted to speak with the happy travelers that Ludwig had told him about. (y/n) knows that it’s an opportunity to convince the Pope to let Vladimir leave without forcing him to be the death of his brother. But for now, the three left behind can only hope that Vladimir will be cooperative so that he doesn’t have to suffer from police brutality of any sort.

“I’m hungry,” Lukas says once the commotion has settled. He looks at (y/n) with dead yet determined eyes.

“Yeah...I’ll make you breakfast,” she mumbles as she heads towards Ludwig’s kitchen. “You two should get ready...I bet you that mean lady soldier is going to come to bring us to the Pope.”

“I hope not,” Arthur grumbles as he heads into their room. Ludwig was kind enough to provide them with clean clothes. “That woman is a beast.”

“She’s just a strong, independent woman,” (y/n) retorts. “Her only problem is that she hates Methuselah way too much.”

“She was scary,” Lukas mumbles. “I don’t want to see her again.”

“Heavens, I know!” Arthur replies. “You know the wench has Ludwig wrapped around her finger. He has been so kind to us of his own accord. I have this uncanny feeling that he’ll be just as cruel as he was before in her presence.”

“Shut up and get dressed!” (y/n) screeches. “I won’t cook breakfast for you if you keep talking crap about Ludwig. He’s been so nice to us lately. You should be thanking him, not bashing him.”

“(y/n),” Lukas calls softly from behind her. “Let Arthur watch out for you.”

“I know what he’s trying to do,” she tells him in a murmur. (y/n) looks away from Lukas as she hands him his breakfast. “This was a part of our plan,” she reassures herself. “Vladimir has enough self-control to get through this. We’re innocent. Ludwig is on our side. I’m sure the Pope will understand. I heard that he’s friendly...even if he’s incompetent…”

“I wouldn’t insult the Pope if I were you, love,” Arthur suddenly calls to her. “He could have your head on a platter if he wanted it.”

“That’s the thing, Artie,” (y/n) tells him, “this Pope wouldn’t want that. Vladimir will be ok in his hands…”

“You better pray to your God that it’ll be like that,” Arthur tells her sternly. “We know how the past Popes have handled Methuselah. This trial might be a complete hoax, you know. They could be preparing to have us killed before the day is up.”

“I won’t let that happen,” Lukas tells them both. His voice is stern. There’s almost some emotion in his lifeless eyes. “I have protected you before. I have no intention of stopping now.”

(y/n)’s lets herself relax for a moment. Lukas is right. She should be able to trust in him by now. Especially after what he did for her and Arthur back at the train. She smiles up at Lukas and nods. “You’re right. I should know by now that you and Vlad and even Arthur are powerful enough to keep us all safe. I feel a little silly for just realizing this now.”

“How come you’ll admit that to Lukas when he’s not even fishing for it?” Arthur grumbles to himself. “I can’t wait until we get this over with…”

“Are you jealous?” (y/n) coos. “Artie should know that he will always be my little brother.”

“Little? You’re so demeaning,” Arthur tells her as he turns away. “Go cuddle with your new boyfriend or something.”

“Lukas wishes he was my boyfriend,” (y/n) replies with a smirk.

“I am confused,” Lukas suddenly sounds. “I thought I was your friend.”

“The monster doesn’t even know what a boyfriend is,” Arthur mutters under his breath. “I wonder what else he oblivious to…”

“A friend isn’t the same as a boyfriend,” (y/n) tries to explain. “I don’t know how you don’t know that…”

“I can’t remember the last time I had human contact,” Lukas confesses quietly. “I can barely remember my brothers’ faces.”

“That’s what we’re here to fix,” (y/n) tells him proudly. Her (e/c) eyes light up brighter than they have in a while as she smiles at him. “We’ll keep our promise just like you’ll keep yours.”

The three have been waiting for Ludwig to come back and bring them to Aleksander’s trial. They sit quietly by the door, drinking some of the delicious hot chocolate that they found in Ludwig’s cabinets. A loud knock suddenly erupts on the door. “Open up now!” a frighteningly female voice rings out. “I’m going to bust zhrough zhis door in five seconds.”

“There’s no need for that,” (y/n) calls back firmly as she opens the door. “We’re not going to resist you or anything. There’s no need to be so hostile all the time. Vladimir isn’t even here.”

“Zhe vampire might be gone, but zhe traitors of humanity are still here. It’s time to get to your trial.”

“Our trial?” Arthur asks quietly. “I thought this was for Aleksander.”

“Don’t be silly,” Herdevery replies sharply. “Zhat monster has already been sentenced to die. His brozher is on his vay as vell.”

"What? That's not what Ludwig said!" (y/n) nearly screams at her.

The female soldier laughs. "Are you serious? I told him to tell you anyzhing zhat vould make you cooperate vizh us. Now it's time for you zhree to be tried and sentenced just like zhe rest of the traitors."

(y/n) sits there in shock for a moment. "You're lying."

"I almost vish I vas," she murmurs as she pulls out her sword. "Now come vizh me or I shall kill you now."

"We will go with you then," Lukas says loudly. He places a hand on (y/n)'s shoulder to calm her down. "She could be lying just to upset you."

"You're right," (y/n) grumbles. She prays to herself that he's right.

The cuffs are tight and the three are brought before a bunch of old, stuffy Cardinals and the Pope himself. (y/n) can't help but feel safe as the Pope looks down on her. He looks so happy. His eyes are closed and an innocent smile rests natuarally on his face. To his right sits a grumpy looking young man who looks to be his relative. But to the left is a man who looks almost as cheerful as the Pope himself.

"We should-a just-a kill them-a now," the grumpy one says harshly.

"Don't be so harsh, Lovi," the cheerful one replies. His green eyes gaze down on the three as he looks them over. These were the companions of that vampire--the vampire that their most loyal soldier had vouched for. "I want to hear what they have to say."

"Ve~" the Pope's voice rings out. "Don't-a be-a so-a scared," he tells the three. "Fratello doesn't mean-a anything he-a says."

    "Where's Vladimir?" (y/n) demands.

"Don't you-a talk-a to the-a Pope like-a that!" the grumpy one screams. "Who do-a you think-a you are!?"

"Relax, Lovi," the cheerful one says. "She's just worried about her friend."

"Ve~ don't-a worry pretty lady. We didn't hurt-a anybody." He turns to the grumpy one and opens his eye slightly. "Should-a we bring-a him out?"

"Let them see their friend," the cheerful one suggests.

“If-a we do-a that, then they-a might-a try to-a escape!” the grumpy one yells again. “Don’t-a be an idiota, fratello.”

“Feli…” the cheerful one mumbles. “They’re cuffed and completely surrounded. It won’t hurt to let them see that their friend is ok. Maybe they’ll cooperate if they do.”

“He’s-a right, fratello,” the Pope murmurs to the grumpy one. “I don’t want to-a see the-a pretty lady look-a so sad.”

The grumpy one leans back in his chair and glares at the three. “You’re-a in-a charge. I won’t-a say-a anything else.”

Vladimir is soon brought out in front of the Pope as well as the Cardinals and all their guards. He is bound tightly at the wrists, a muzzle is strapped tightly to his face. He is more humiliated than anything else. But he is also relieved that Arthur and (y/n) aren’t in the same position. He is more relieved to know that his little brother isn’t going to be killed yet. He sees the fear in (y/n)’s eyes and turns away slightly. Their confidence is fading quickly. How will they talk themselves out of this mess? This was not part of the plan. They are lucky that Vladimir and Ludwig were prepared for this conflict.

“Sir!” Herdevery shouts as the vampire begins his way over to his three companions. “I suggest zhat ve do not let zhem near each ozher. Zhey might conspire to escape.”

Vladimir rolls his eyes at her and hisses slightly. (y/n) is quick to glare at him for being an idiot. He doesn’t need to act like an animal in front of the people who want to kill him for being something they consider less than human. “Vlad!” she spits as a warning.

“(y/n),” Arthur murmurs in her ear. “Don’t do anything incriminating. Not in front of the Pope.”

“Zhese zhree have betryed zhe human race by defending a vampire,” Herdevery declares to all in the room. “Zhey should be put to death as zhe law says.”

“What?” the Pope yells, his eyes wide open now. “No! I don’t-a want to-a kill a pretty lady! Besides...Ludwig said that-a they helped save the city…”

“Perhaps Beilschmidt vas under zhe influence of zhe vampire vhen he said zhose zhings to you,” she dares to say to the Pope.

All eyes dart back to the vampire standing alone in the center of the room. Guns, swords, spears, arrows are all pointed directly at him. (y/n) can’t bare the thought of Vladimir in danger. She ignores the warning glances from both Arthur and Lukas and races toward him. “You idiots!” she screams at the crowd. “He’s only ever saved lives! Why do you want to take his?”

“He even has zhe ‘pretty lady’ wrapped around his finger. I say zhey all deserve to die!”

“Why do you hate vampires so much?” Lukas suddenly asks her, though he sounds barely interested. “Vlad didn’t even do anything to you.”

“A vampire killed her husband,” a familiar masculine voice sounds. Ludwig is suddenly standing next to the Pope, his gun pointed at the vampire. (y/n) stares up at him in shock. What could he be doing? “So now she is after all vampires. Zhat is not my reason for hunting you beasts down. I only vish to protect zhe Pope.” He winks at (y/n) and lowers his gun. “But I do not believe zhat zhis one is a zhreat to him.”

“See how zhe monster has brainwashed even our finest soldier?” Herdevery calls out. “Vampires are poison. Zhey all deserve nozhing but to perish.”

One shot of her gun is all it takes for chaos to break through. With the sound of that gun comes (y/n) racing to protect Vlad from the silver bullet. Arthur is quick to cast a mist spell to prevent other soldiers from shooting at his family. And Lukas...Lukas loses himself.

He’s not sure what is happening to himself, or why. All he knows is that the tingling sensation in fingers is back, and spreading throughout his body. He can see through the mist clearly and finds (y/n) and Vladimir both safe from the bullet. He doesn’t know why, but the bullet is frozen in midair.

The sound of several more gunshots ring throughout the room. Lukas’ eyes widen. They’re not their usual dull color, but a vibrant royal blue. The mist around him freezes solid and he feels a strange fire spread through his body.

(y/n), Vlad, Arthur, the soldiers, Cardinals, and Pope can see nothing but mist until a bright blue light fills the entire room. A chill is soon to follow along with a gust of wind so powerful that it blows the mist away, breaking the stained glass windows in the process. No one knows what exactly is going on until the mist finally clears. And it’s horrifying.

    Lukas really is a monster.

Eyes glowing blue, wings as black as night, he stands alone, surrounded by people who fear him. There is nothing on his mind but keeping (y/n) safe. With a wave of his black-clawed hand, the guns in the room become covered in ice. The floor around him is slowly freezing as well. He glares at the woman who fired the first shot at (y/n). Ice begins to form at Herdevery’s feet, slowly creeping up her legs despite her protests.

(y/n) lets go of Vladimir and slowly approaches the monster she believes to be Lukas. There’s panic throughout the room now, but she believes that Lukas doesn’t intend to hurt anyone. “Lukas?” she calls softly. The monster turns to her with wide, piercing eyes. His face is far too menacing to belong to Lukas. “Lukas, stop it,” she demands.

His dark blue lips open slightly at her demand, revealing fangs much more menacing than any normal vampire. “Protect you,” he tells her gruffly. He sees his reflection in her eyes and flinches slightly. “M-monster?”

“Let Herdevery go,” (y/n) tells him, ignoring his concern. “Lukas--”

“Get away from him, (y/n)!” Arthur yells. “He’s a monster!”

The ice stops spreading and Lukas begins to back away from (y/n). Vladimir takes the chance to break out of his frozen cuffs and rip his muzzle off. He grabs onto Arthur’s arm and races toward both (y/n) and Lukas. “Good job,” he tells Lukas with a smile. “They’re too afraid to move! Now’s our chance to get out of here.”

(y/n) grabs onto Lukas’ sleeve. Ignoring how cold he is, she drags him along after Arthur and Vladimir. “Where are we going?” she calls to Vladimir.

“I am going to find my brother,” he replies quietly. “You three are going to meet Ludvig outside.”

“Ludwig is still on our side?” Arthur asks him skeptically. “You really believe that with this monster on our side?”

“Lukas is not a monster!” (y/n) yells. She looks back at him quickly and takes in how different his face is like this. Even his hair is longer. His eyes, glowing blue, stare at her feet as they make their way to the outside of the building. “Lukas…”

“Don’t vorry about that now,” Vladimir tells her sternly. “You trust Ludvig, yes? Don’t vorry,  Puiule. I’ll catch up vith you shortly.” Vladimir sends them all a sincere smile before racing off towards the cells. He trusts Ludwig. He trusts that Ludwig will be there with the van that he promised to use to take them to his brother. Yes. His brother isn’t dead like everyone thinks. Ludwig knows this is true. Vladimir was ecstatic to know where they would be going. His brother could be rehabilitated there.

“Things have gone to hell because of you,” Vladimir tells Aleksander when he finds his cell. The other vampires are screaming at Vladmir from their cells, telling him to let them out so they can get their revenge on the humans who had imprisoned them. “You should be thankful I’m going out of my vay to rescue you. They’ll kill you for sure now…” He unlocks the door with the key that Ludwig had given him earlier and waits for his brother to come out as well. Aleksander is wearing a muzzle as well as reinforced handcuffs. He glares at his brother in forced silence until Vladimr takes the muzzle off for him. “We better run. I don’t know how long they’ll vait for us.”

(y/n), Arthur, and Lukas crawl into the back of the van that Ludwig has parked just outside the cathedral. Lukas curls up in the corner, wrapping his wings tightly around himself. Ice crystals are forming by his feet. He stares down at his claws, eyes wide with fear.

Vladimir and Aleksander are quick to enter the van as well. “Vhat is that thing?” Aleksander nearly screams as he scurries to the opposite end of the van. “Humans aren’t enough for you brother? You’re siding vith monsters too?”

“Lukas is not a monster!” (y/n) repeats. She’s getting tired of saying that. She plops herself down next to Lukas as Ludwig begins to drive away. “Where are we going?”

“Zhere is country in between Rome and the Empire,” Ludwig tells her from the driver’s seat. “Zhe ruler is a vampire, though ve have a neutrality agreement vizh him. Not many people know, but my brozher has been under his care for quite some time. I almost trust zhe man…”

“Why do you act like your brother has been killed by Methuselah?” Arthur asks him sternly as he crawls into the passenger’s seat.

“It...it makes it easier for people like Elizaveta to trust me,” Ludwig grumbles. “I havent seen my brozher since he first left…”

(y/n) sighs and moves Lukas’ wing away from his face. “Don’t worry,” she tells him with a smile. “You did really well. We escaped because of you.”

“M-monster…” Lukas grumbles. He pulls his knees up his chest and glares at his feet. He breathes in deeply and lets out a shaky breath. The coldness slowly fades away as a blue light consumes his form once again. (y/n) has to look away because it’s so bright, but when she looks back, he’s normal again. Well...Lukas is almost normal. His eyes are dimmer than they ever were before. His hands shake slightly as he curls up in the corner of the van. He doesn’t know what to think. If he’s this monster, are his brothers the same? How can (y/n) still be kind to him when he’s this...this… “Monster…”
It's been a while, I know. This is thought to write. I know where I want to go with this it's just...hard getting there. But Norway finally reveals his crusnik form :)

Been reading this story for a bit and I'm super hooked onto it! I can't wait to read the rest ^^

But dammit I feel so bad for Lukas... The poor guy doesn't even know who or what he is and he's getting backlash from others... :cries: (Lukasit'sokayyou'renotamonsterdon'tlistentothem)
